Streets by the Sea

Local author and librarian, Helen Pedley, touches on the little-told history of events dating back to the early 1800s involving British and European exploration that led to Rockingham Bay being identified as a future settlement and port, ultimately to be named Cardwell.
Helen’s research includes fascinating stories from those very first days of settlement on the shores of Rockingham Bay in 1864.
The early choice of street names for Cardwell was heavily influenced by the British colonial presence linking this frontier Australian settlement to England and London.
Later, the two world wars of the 20th century, and those local men and women who served in them, were also to have a significant influence on the choice of street and place names, permanently written into our history.
The Cardwell & District Historical Society publicly launched Helen’s book in 2014, as part of its commemoration marking Cardwell’s 150th anniversary of settlement.
Streets by the Sea is not only a valuable historical reference but an unusual and fascinating look into our history.
